For Carthage native Jonathan L. Hirschey, there was never a question of pursuing business in the north country.

“It’s home … I feel a connection to the area and I want to see the area succeed,” said the sales account manager for Climax Paperboard. Climax specializes in paperboard manufacturing and shipping.

“I started out as product coordinator and then moved into sales,” Mr. Hirschey said.

He is a fourth-generation member of the Hirschey family at the company, which his great-granduncle, Samuel L. Hirschey, founded in 1902. The company no longer is family owned, but they still maintain a presence.

Climax Manufacturing Co. is located in Lowville with Climax Paperboard Inc. just up the river in Carthage. A third plant, Climax Packaging Inc. is based in St. Joseph, Mo.

Mr. Hirschey manages inside sales and business development.

“Always listening to the voice of the customer is huge,” he advised. “You have to make a product that the customer wants to buy.”

He maintains that the business has prospered because it does not sell products that it makes; it makes products that the customer wants to buy.
