On March 25, 2016, SUNY Potsdam, the oldest of state system’s 64 campuses, marked the founding of St. Lawrence Academy. The present-day college traces its beginnings to 1816 when the Academy and its first Board of Trustees were formed. Two centuries later, SUNY Potsdam is a story of the evolution of educational excellence.

Since 2011, the north country has received $338.1m in state money to develop infrastructure, housing and projects that will lead to sustainable local jobs. Last month, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo raised the stakes with a new competition that could send another $500m to NNY. Officials say the region is prepared for a tough fight.

Thirty years ago, Anthony G. Collins — then a 32-year-old Australian with little knowledge of the north country — arrived in Potsdam to begin work as an engineering professor at Clarkson University. In 2003, Mr. Collins ascended to the university’s presidency, becoming only the third person in Clarkson’s history selected for the post from inside its ranks. We sat down with Mr. Collins and talked about Clarkson’s successes and its future.
