30 years later, DANC develops tools for success

A landfill hauler dumps trash at a regional solid waste management
facility. Workers install new fiber-optic cable for a high-speed telecommunications line. An entrepreneur acquires a loan to start a seasonal resort.

Those are but a few activities in Northern New York made possible by the Development Authority of the North Country, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. The authority has seen many growing pains since it was established in June 1985 by the state Legislature, finding numerous ways to contract with municipalities and residents across Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. On the occasion of 30 years of service, we sat down with DANC Executive Director James W. “Jim” Wright to learn more about his agency’s mission and its future. [Read more…]

Since 2011, the north country has received $338.1m in state money to develop infrastructure, housing and projects that will lead to sustainable local jobs. Last month, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo raised the stakes with a new competition that could send another $500m to NNY. Officials say the region is prepared for a tough fight.

Thank soldiers for calling NNY home

May is National Military Appreciation Month. Officially recognized by Congress in 1999, we celebrate V.E. Day (May 8), Armed Forces Day (May 19), and Memorial Day (May 30). It is a time when we reflect on the services and sacrifices of the men and women serving our great nation and thank them for their work. In the north country, home to the Army’s 10th Mountain Division, our pride is evident with American flags on our front porches, yellow ribbons tied to our trees and in our shop windows. During this time, we should also reflect on the many soldiers and their families that have called our communities home and that have helped to grow the economy of our region and diversify our culture.
