30 years later, DANC develops tools for success

A landfill hauler dumps trash at a regional solid waste management
facility. Workers install new fiber-optic cable for a high-speed telecommunications line. An entrepreneur acquires a loan to start a seasonal resort.

Those are but a few activities in Northern New York made possible by the Development Authority of the North Country, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. The authority has seen many growing pains since it was established in June 1985 by the state Legislature, finding numerous ways to contract with municipalities and residents across Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. On the occasion of 30 years of service, we sat down with DANC Executive Director James W. “Jim” Wright to learn more about his agency’s mission and its future. [Read more…]

Neighbors of Watertown Inc. plans to undertake a $9.3 million project to renovate the Brighton Apartments and Empsall Plaza in the city. Amanda Morrison / NNY Business

Plans are underway for $9.3 million in renovations to the Brighton Apartments and Empsall Plaza that will create eight new units, commercial space for the former Velocity space and a main back entrance.

Neighbors of Watertown Inc. is applying for $5.9 million in state affordable housing tax credits to renovate 36 existing apartments on floors three through eight and create eight more units on the second floor. [Read more…]

City building activity slows in Q1

2011 saw record-setting $43m in construction permits

Construction activity in the Watertown area is off to a sluggish start this year on the heels of a record-setting 2011, a review of building permits indicates.

Major projects, including the continuing construction of Creek Wood Apartments off Mill Street and renovations to Samaritan Medical Center, contributed to the more than $32 million in declared construction value during the third and fourth quarters of 2011.
