Earning the view from the top

For four north country women who work in traditionally male-dominated fields, success means hard work and striking the right balance.

North country women have made significant strides in traditionally male-dominated fields over the years, but there continues to be mixed opinions about equality in the workplace.

Some female business professionals agreed that traits more common in women, such as being compassionate, a good listener and a fair mediator, can often put them at an advantage in the workplace.

But the issue that often holds women back from “reaching the top” of their profession, such as becoming a partner in a firm, isn’t their male colleagues.

Although Lisa A. L’Huillier has encountered plenty of ceilings in her decades-long career as a Realtor, she’s never hit a glass one.

Ms. L’Huillier, a New York State licensed real estate broker and the owner of Hefferon Real Estate, Watertown, says she has never faced discrimination as a woman in business, something she attributes to the prevalence of females in her field.

  • Career: Twenty years at General Electric, lastly as manager of finance for locations in Binghamton and Valley Forge. Eighteen years at St. Lawrence University in current position.
  • Family: Married to husband, Brian, two children ages 26 and 24, and a granddaughter, 5.
  • Last book read: “Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back,” by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent.

Women owned approximately 7.8 million businesses, excluding farms, in the United States in 2007, according to the most recent Survey of Business Owners published by the U.S. Census Bureau. In that same survey, New York State reported 594,421 women-owned firms, with a total of $84 billion in receipts, making it third behind California and Texas for the number of women entrepreneurs.

But the statistics don’t tell the whole story.
